The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Iris Bloom arrived in 2021 from Habibi NY, a New York-based niche house. The brand called on Guillaume Flavigny to create this composition. The brief was deceptively simple: iris as the star, but not the only star. The idea was to build a composition where the powdery, slightly dusty quality of orris butter, the kind used in high perfumery for its violet-powder signature, carried the weight without tipping into antique territory. Blackcurrant brightened the top, adding a tart, luminous quality that catches attention immediately. Turkish rose added body, bringing a rich, velvety depth to the fragrance. In the base, sandalwood's creamy warmth mingles with amber's golden glow, while vetiver's earthy undertones ground the composition.
What makes this composition unusual is how the iris functions. In most modern fragrances, iris reads as a supporting character, a soft powder accent in the drydown. Here, it opens the fragrance's second chapter and stays throughout, never quite disappearing. The blackcurrant in the top notes serves a specific purpose: it gives the dusty iris something to push against. Without that tart, almost wine-like brightness, the iris would sit flat and heavy. The geranium adds a green, slightly medicinal counterpoint that prevents the whole thing from becoming sweet. The smoky woods, frankincense and oud, do the heavy lifting in the base, giving the fragrance its nighttime character. This is not a daytime-only floral.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately: blackcurrant sweetness that's almost too ripe for the first five minutes, before geranium and iris arrive to complicate it. The iris here is dusty, not sweet, orris butter's signature violet-powder quality that signals serious perfumery rather than mass-market florals. Blackcurrant softens the bite. Turkish rose appears in the top, lending its bright, aromatic presence alongside the fruit note, adding a classic rose character that provides immediate floral context. As the fragrance develops, frankincense and saffron appear in the heart's second chapter, adding smoke and a leathery warmth that shifts the composition from floral to something more resinous. The iris never fully disappears, it threads through like a quiet argument. By hour three, the base takes over.
Cultural impact
Iris Bloom presents a full iris-oud-rose structure that demonstrates serious perfumery ambition. This kind of composition requires careful balance, the powdery iris needing enough weight to stand up to the richness of oud while rose provides connective tissue between the two. The result is a fragrance that works as both an artistic statement and a wearable evening scent. Community feedback highlights the longevity as a particular strength, with wearers noting how well the iris quality holds up over hours of wear.
