The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Anisia Bella carries a name with built-in intrigue. Anise is a paradox: medicinal and aromatic, familiar from the kitchen and the digestif cart, strange when worn close to skin. Perfumer Aurélien Guichard approached it through contrast: a bright herb against the cooler, more exotic spice of star anise. The result sits somewhere between a green fragrance and an aromatic one. The herb provides an immediate freshness that catches attention, while the star anise brings a cooler, more complex depth beneath it. Together they create something that feels both familiar and unexpected, a fragrance that rewards attention and invites you to discover its layers.
The star anise doesn't announce itself as the main event. It arrives after the citrus and basil have already opened the composition, providing a counterpoint rather than a climax. The green tea note functions as a bridge, earthy and slightly bitter against the bright top, grounding the sharper aromatics before powdery florals arrive to soften the whole structure. Cassia, a relative of cinnamon, provides warmth and spice that integrates with the florals.
The evolution
The opening hits fast: citrus and basil arrive together, the basil providing an herbaceous snap that the orange then brightens. Within minutes, star anise appears, cool and slightly medicinal, carrying the unmistakable shape of black licorice but without the sugar. Green tea sits underneath throughout this phase, adding an earthy counterweight to the brightness. The transition to heart is gradual. Jasmine and violet arrive wrapped in cassia's warm spice, creating a powdery floral middle that softens the anise's sharpness without erasing it. The drydown belongs to cedar and musk. But the real lingerer is the licorice, not loud, not sweet, just warm and close to skin. The citrus is long gone. The anise has softened to a whisper. The cedar and musk hold the base, and that quiet licorice remains, persisting as a subtle reminder of the fragrance's character.
Cultural impact
Anisia Bella stands out in the Aqua Allegoria lineup through its anise-forward composition. The fragrance features a dominant star anise note that shapes its character throughout the wear. Guerlain's house style, with its powdery floral softness, influences how the anise reads on the skin, creating something that feels both distinctive and refined. The combination of bold anise with the brand's characteristic elegance makes this a memorable entry in the Aqua Allegoria range.
