The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Temperament arrived in 1999, composed as an aromatic-fruity statement built on contrast: cooling watermelon and melon set against the herbal snap of lavender and coriander. A white floral heart of jasmine, orange blossom, magnolia, and geranium bridges the bright opening and the deeper base notes below. Pineapple and green apple add tart, juicy edges to the fruits, while the interplay between the watery melon accord and the lavender's aromatic sharpness gives the composition a crisp, sun-catching quality from the very first spray. There is something distinctly of its era in how the cool fruits and warm white florals are layered together, the herbal and ozonic elements threading between them to keep the whole from tipping into sweetness.
What makes Temperament structurally interesting is how the top notes refuse to behave like a single fruit basket. Melon and watermelon share a watery sweetness, but pineapple and green apple pull toward sharper, more acidic territory, and lavender and coriander cut through both with herbal coolness. The result is an opening that reads less like juice and more like a chilled cocktail, herbaceous and effervescent at once. The floral heart then acts as a softener rather than a headline, with magnolia adding a creamy dimension that the lighter fruits couldn't carry alone.
The evolution
On skin, Temperament opens with a burst of watermelon and melon that registers almost immediately, bright and slightly aquatic thanks to the lavender threading through. The opening phase feels like the most overtly fruity moment, with pineapple and green apple adding tart, juicy edges and coriander lending a peppery herbal lift that keeps the sweetness in check. As the fragrance settles, the fruits recede and the white florals step forward: jasmine and orange blossom give the composition a soapy softness that feels almost clean-laundered, and magnolia adds a creamy warmth that rounds out the heart. Gradually, the woody base begins to assert itself as the ozonic quality lifts from the surface. Cedar and sandalwood provide a dry, slightly creamy foundation, with iris contributing a cool, powdery touch that softens the woods.
Cultural impact
Temperament reads as a snapshot of a particular moment in fragrance, when cool, watery fruits and herbal lavender were a go-to combination for everyday wear. The composition captures that breezy, sporty-clean sensibility, with the fruits doing the cheerful work upfront and the florals and woods grounding things underneath. Even now, the way the watermelon and melon are paired with crisp lavender and coriander gives it a refreshing, feel-good character that feels easy to reach for. It's a reminder of how playful and accessible late-1990s fruity-aromatic perfumery could be.
