Why it exists.
The beginning
Part of the Fruit d'Amour collection that debuted in 2015, Fruit d'Amour Lilac draws from fairytale imagery: enchanted fruit, attraction potions, the moment in a story when magic takes hold. The bottle itself, an apple-shaped violet flask crowned with baroque gold, makes no pretense of subtlety. It is unmistakably Ungaro.
What distinguishes this fragrance is the bitter-herbal presence of wormwood in the opening. It's the kind of note that shows up in absinthe, not in fruity perfumes, and its inclusion here creates an unexpected tension with the raspberry and blueberry. The composition refuses to be purely confectionery. Then there's the black orchid and patchouli pairing in the heart, dark, velvety, almost brooding against the fruit's brightness. Rose adds warmth without softening the edges, and the benzoin-cashmere wood drydown gives the base a soft, intimate quality that rounds everything out.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly, a burst of raspberry and blueberry. The sweetness is immediate, almost syrupy, but wormwood's bitter-herbal edge cuts through before it can settle. Within twenty minutes, that herbal quality fades and the heart begins to emerge. Black orchid takes its time, dark, velvety, almost brooding. Rose adds warmth without apology. Patchouli grounds everything, earthy and persistent, keeping the sweetness from becoming overwhelming. The raspberry does not disappear. It deepens, becoming syrupy and intimate, woven through the heart rather than announcing itself. By the second hour, the drydown takes over. Caramel arrives sticky and warm, clinging to skin with amber's glow. Benzoin adds a hint of resin, and cashmere wood provides the soft, enveloping finish. Patchouli continues to linger beneath the sweetness.
Cultural impact
The 2016 launch introduced Fruit d'Amour Lilac to the collection. The baroque golden cap and apple-shaped violet bottle signal a distinctive approach to design. Without named perfumer attribution, the fragrance reflects the house's creative direction.
