The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
White Diamonds arrived in 1991 as Elizabeth Taylor's second fragrance, following the 1987 debut of Passion. Taylor reportedly involved herself deeply in the formulation process, supervising from initial concept through final production, treating each launch as a personal statement rather than a licensing exercise. White Diamonds was designed to deliver immediately perceptible florality, with aldehydes providing the sparkling top notes that gave the scent its opening impact. The composition balanced classic perfumery ingredients with contemporary sensibilities, creating something that felt both timeless and of-the-moment. For Taylor, this was glamour distilled into a bottle, cinema's greatest beauty made into something a woman could wear.
The aldehydes are the tell. They give White Diamonds its immediate presence, that sparkling, slightly soapy brightness that opens like a spotlight. Paired with bergamot, neroli, and orange, the top registers bright and confident before the florals take over. What follows is a heart built on abundance: Egyptian tuberose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, Turkish rose, narcissus, and orris root create a white floral density that borders on opulent. The carnation and cinnamon add a quiet spice underneath, keeping the florals from reading as purely innocent. The oakmoss in the base anchors everything to the classic chypre tradition, giving the composition its vintage backbone.
The evolution
The aldehydes hit first, bright, effervescent, an immediate sparkle that announces itself in the room. Within minutes the florals take over: jasmine and tuberose first, then ylang-ylang arriving with its creamy sweetness. The heart holds for hours, dense and opulent, the narcissus lending a powdery characteristic that feels distinctly vintage. Around the fourth hour, the base begins to assert itself. Oakmoss and patchouli ground the composition while sandalwood and musk create a warm, close-to-skin finish. The drydown isn't dramatic, it's the soft warmth that lingers on fabric long after the wearer has left. Lasts 8-10 hours on most skin types.
Cultural impact
White Diamonds was inducted into the Fragrance Foundation's Hall of Fame in 2009, a recognition that placed it among the most significant fragrances of the modern era. Its success demonstrated that celebrity fragrance could be more than a licensing novelty, setting a template that countless other celebrities would follow in the decades to come. For many wearers, White Diamonds remains the definitive aldehydic floral: bold, unapologetic, and built to be noticed.
