The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fresh Mint arrived in 2012 as part of Durance en Provence's L'òme line, a collection of aromatic compositions for men. Where this one breaks from the obvious is in its stubborn dedication to a single raw material: mint. Not the sweet, confected mint of candy canes or gum, but the leafy, cool variety you'd find growing in a kitchen garden or pressed between the fingers on a warm afternoon. The treatment keeps it green, bracing, and aromatically sharp. An aromatic cologne dressed up with enough herbal backbone to feel deliberate and composed, without drifting into candy territory. The mint opens cold and bright, carrying a real mentholated snap in the first minutes, then settles into a structured green that holds its composure well past the opening act.
What's interesting here is the tension between the top and the base. Curly mint and peppermint dominate the first hour, bright and almost mentholated, while clary sage, cardamom, and tarragon steer the composition into deeper herbal territory. The interplay between these middle notes and the cooling top creates a layered aromatic profile that resists flattening. Tarragon brings a subtle anise whisper that adds intrigue without dominating, and clary sage contributes a dry, slightly musky depth that keeps the sweetness honest.
The evolution
The opening is pure garden. Curly mint and peppermint push forward with green lemon lifting the top like citrus zest squeezed over fresh leaves. There's nothing subtle about it. You smell like you just brushed past a mint patch, leaves crushed underfoot, sap still wet. As the minutes pass, the cooling sharpness recedes and clary sage steps up, bringing a slightly musky dryness that adds gravity. Cardamom warms the edges, its spice curling around the green. Tarragon adds its faint anise flicker, a whisper of licorice that registers more as intrigue than sweetness. From the mid-phase onward, the drydown settles into vetiver and cedarwood with a clean musk underneath. The mint doesn't vanish entirely, but it becomes a ghost in the background, cool and green against the warmer wood.
Cultural impact
Within the Durance catalogue, Fresh Mint sits in the L'òme collection, a line dedicated to aromatic and herbal compositions. It's one of the more distinctive offerings in that grouping, built almost entirely around a single ingredient family: mint, in its various forms. The fragrance treats mint as a serious aromatic material, pairing it with clary sage, cardamom, tarragon, vetiver, and cedar to create something layered and structured rather than one-dimensional. It appeals to wearers who want freshness with complexity, who appreciate the difference between mint as a cooling sensation and mint as a composed aromatic note.
