The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Joli Coquelicot, also known as Pretty Poppy, arrived in 2018 as an eau de parfum from French house Durance en Provence. The composition pairs the bright irregularity of fruit with a romantic white-floral heart. Mandarin Orange, blackcurrant, and pear establish the first impression, while jasmine, rose, and ylang-ylang bring the bloom into focus. The opening is lively and juicy, with citrus brightness tempered by the dark, tart sparkle of blackcurrant and the rounded freshness of pear. As the fragrance settles, the floral notes soften the fruit, creating a balance that feels both crisp and gently romantic. Jasmine adds a clean white-floral lift, rose gives the heart a familiar powdery warmth, and ylang-ylang introduces a smooth, sensual depth. Nothing here demands attention politely.
The interesting part is the friction between fruit and flowers. Mandarin Orange and pear bring citrus brightness and juicy softness, but blackcurrant adds a dark, tart edge that keeps the opening from becoming simple sweetness. Jasmine, rose, and ylang-ylang then give that fruit a floral setting rather than letting it stand alone. The base changes the temperature again: cashmere wood and sandalwood make the composition more tactile, while vanilla rounds the edges without turning it overtly dessert-like. It's a useful contrast, fruit that behaves a little sharp, flowers with their shoes off.
The evolution
The first impression is crisp and bittersweet. Mandarin Orange catches the light, pear adds cool juiciness, and blackcurrant puts a dark edge on the brightness. During the opening, the fruit can feel brisk and almost herbal. Then the floral notes take the wheel. Jasmine gives the air a clean white-floral lift, rose brings softness without losing color, and ylang-ylang adds a smooth, slightly tropical texture. The composition gradually trades brightness for touch as sandalwood and cashmere wood move underneath, making the heart feel fuller and more grounded. Vanilla arrives last as a gentle sweetener rather than a dramatic dessert note. By the drydown, the sharper fruit has largely disappeared. What remains is a woody floral warmth with a soft vanilla finish, moderate projection, and a long, close-to-skin drydown.
Cultural impact
Joli Coquelicot has an appeal that lies in a familiar but considered register: sunlit fruit and familiar florals made distinctive by a tart blackcurrant edge and a soft woody finish. Mandarin Orange lends the opening a polished brightness, while pear gives the fruit a rounded, juicy quality. Blackcurrant supplies the more characterful note, adding a dark tartness that keeps the composition from reading as simply sweet. As jasmine, rose, and ylang-ylang emerge, the fragrance gains a romantic floral centre, with rose adding familiar softness and ylang-ylang contributing smooth depth.
