The beginning
Ghaliyah Ghazali sits inside Dixit & Zak's Ghaliyah series, a line that draws on the masala-leaning traditions of Indian attar blending. The name reads as Arabic in form, carrying the echo of ghaliyah, the classical Arabian concentrate thick with oud and floral oils. Perfumer Nitish Dixit shaped this composition as an exploration of rose from multiple angles, leaning into a duality that places Bulgarian rose otto at the opening and Turkish rose absolute at the heart. The two roses behave differently on skin: the Bulgarian reads airy and almost translucent in the first minutes, while the Turkish absolute settles into a denser, honeyed register that warms with body heat rather than burning off.
What makes Ghaliyah Ghazali unusual is its layering of rose materials. Bulgarian rose otto, prized for its clarity and lemony lift, sits at the top. Turkish rose absolute, deeper and almost jammy with honeyed facets, arrives in the heart alongside osmanthus, a material that adds a leathery apricot undertone that shifts the floral character away from anything purely pretty. The osmanthus behaves almost like a chord against the roses, lending them a darker, fruit-skin edge rather than letting them read as a simple bouquet.
The evolution
On skin, Ghaliyah Ghazali begins with a bright collision of bergamot and incense, the citrus sharp for the first 15 minutes before the Bulgarian rose otto blooms through. Around the 30-minute mark, the heart takes over: Turkish rose absolute deepens, osmanthus adds that apricot-leather note, and the spices arrive in a slow wave rather than a punch. Jasmine absolute and tuberose flicker in and out, sometimes present, sometimes just a ghost. By the 2-hour mark, the florals have receded enough for the base to claim the composition. Ambergris softens everything. Mysore sandalwood gives the drydown a creamy, almost powdered warmth. Civet and castoreum add a skin-like animalic edge that stays intimate rather than aggressive. The oud, present from the start, becomes most prominent in the final 4-5 hours, threading through the sandalwood and resins.
