The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nitish Dixit founded Dixit & Zak in Pune in 2019 with an avowed focus on two pillars of Indian perfumery, oud and sandalwood, approached with the rigor of laboratory precision. Vintage 84 represents a deliberate departure from that founding identity. Rather than anchoring the composition in agarwood, Dixit chose to step away from the house's signature material and build something entirely different, one that would distill a specific atmospheric memory: a late-summer afternoon in Pune when heat and humidity press against open windows and the air carries both sharp zest and soft floral weight. The brief was simple in concept but demanding in execution, requiring the perfumer to balance brightness and warmth in equal measure without relying on deep, resinous base materials to smooth the transition.
Dixit's note philosophy for Vintage 84 centered on contrast: citrus brightness against warm floral depth, with ginger and sandalwood serving as the bridging materials that prevent the two extremes from feeling disconnected. The decision to include both bergamot and pink grapefruit in the opening reflects a nuanced approach to citrus, using grapefruit's slightly bitter, pink-tinged character to add dimension where a single citrus note would read as simpler. Orange blossom was selected for its waxy, slightly indolic quality that differentiates the florals in the opening from a standard green rose note.
The evolution
The opening of Vintage 84 strikes immediately, with bergamot and pink grapefruit supplying a tart, energizing citrus quality that reads as clean and bright against the skin. Orange blossom softens the very top notes almost from the first spray, introducing a waxy floral element that prevents the opening from feeling like a cleaning product. The rose note pulses gently through both opening and heart, providing continuity as the structure shifts. Within the first fifteen minutes, ginger emerges from the heart, warming the mid-section with a spice that cuts cleanly through the fading citrus, preventing the composition from losing energy as the top notes diffuse. Tuberose takes a dominant position in the heart phase, delivering the creamy, almost narcotic white-floral richness that defines much of Vintage 84's wear time. As the heart notes begin to settle around the fourth hour, sandalwood enters the drydown, replacing the florals with a soft, lactonic woodiness that sits close to the skin but carries the fragrance through a quiet, agreeable close.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 debut, Vintage 84 has become a reference point for fans of Indian sandalwood, praised for its balanced citrus‑floral‑woody character. Reviewers note its approachable sillage and the way the Mysore sandalwood shines without overwhelming, positioning it as a go‑to for those seeking a modern Indian niche fragrance that works in both casual and semi‑formal settings.
