The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Kamikura was created by Shinohara Yasuyuki in 2024 to mark the 20th anniversary of GENTS AB, a Swedish fragrance retailer. The collaboration brought together DI SER's material sourcing with a request for something contemplative, something rooted in place. Rather than lean into its laboratory origins, DI SER looked outward. Ezo spruce and Sakhalin fir became the backbone. The fragrance is less an interpretation of a specific shrine than an atmosphere: cold conifers, bright citrus, the clean tension of a sacred space before anyone arrives. There's a stillness to it that reads as architecture, not as scent alone, as though the composition itself were designed to hold quiet the way a wooden hall holds warmth in winter.
Kamikura uses Ezo spruce and Sakhalin fir alongside a Japanese lavender variant that carries more camphor than its standard counterpart. The yuzu adds a citrus note that feels close to the actual fruit, with the bitter brightness of pith and rind rather than any bergamot-style sweetness. There's oud CO2 in the base, used here for the resinous depth it brings to the composition. The whole composition operates on a principle of botanical precision over approximation.
The evolution
The first minutes are bright with citrus. Lime and yuzu hit sharp, and the rosemary underneath carries a camphor edge that feels cooling, almost mentholated. The lavender threads through this phase, adding a clean herbal facet. Soon after, the spruces arrive. Ezo spruce and Sakhalin fir take over with a resinous, sappy greenness that smells like raw wood split open. The lavender continues through this middle phase, bridging the bright opening and the dense woody heart. As the composition settles, oakmoss provides a dark, earthy floor. The oud CO2 is present but restrained, adding a smoky depth rather than dominating. Patchouli and vetiver ground everything with their dry, rooty character. The drydown is the quietest phase, a close-skin blend of forest floor and soft smoke that lingers well into the next day on clothing.
Cultural impact
Kamikura represents a specific kind of Japanese fragrance practice: the use of geographically specific ingredients, including Ezo spruce, Sakhalin fir, and yuzu, treated with the precision of a research facility. Its collaboration with Swedish retailer GENTS AB gives it an unusual cross-cultural dimension, bridging a Japanese botanical sensibility with a Scandinavian retail context. The composition reads as firmly rooted in natural materials rather than synthetic approximation, offering an alternative for wearers drawn to green-woody territory who want something that feels specific rather than generic.
