The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bestium arrived in 2020. The name itself, Latin for 'beast', announces the intent. Inspiration comes from medieval bestiaries, from the carved creatures that watch from Barcelona's modernist facades: twin-headed eagles, salamanders, horses frozen mid-gallop in stone. These carved animals possess a weight and presence that goes beyond simple decoration. The intent is not ornamental. It reaches toward something wilder, something that exists beneath the polished surface of modern life. Bestium captures that underlying tension between the refined and the dangerous.
What makes Bestium structurally interesting is the way it refuses to resolve. Rose and oud pull in opposite directions, one associated with beauty, poetry, the tender; the other dark, animalic, indifferent to opinion. In most formulas where rose meets oud, they soften each other into something wearable. Here, the saffron amplifies the friction rather than resolving it. The result is a fragrance that leans into dissonance instead of harmony, which is a bold compositional choice that won't appeal to everyone but creates something genuinely arresting for those willing to follow it down.
The evolution
The opening is the most intense phase. Saffron and rose collide in something that reads sharp, almost acrid. Bulgarian rose, full and extravagant, asserts itself as the saffron calms into the heart. Incense smoke threads through, slowly taking over as the rose loosens its grip. The base arrives with Laotian oud as a dark, tar-like force. Cistus adds a balsamic richness. Animalic qualities become more pronounced as the florals recede. By the drydown, incense persists but has faded to a whisper. A ghost of smoke on fabric. Something darker left on skin the next morning.
Cultural impact
Part of the Bestial Collection, Bestium occupies a specific corner of niche perfumery: dark, animalic, assertive. The oud-rose-incense triad places it in conversation with bold oriental compositions, though the saffron-forward opening and emphasis on animalic warmth give it a distinct character. The intensity that divides opinion is also what makes it memorable for those who connect with it. This boldness is precisely what makes it memorable for those who connect with it.
