The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Super Moon arrives from the house's Summer Journey Collection, capturing the specific glow of a full moon over Mediterranean summer nights. The house describes it as the magic of endless summer nights under a glowing full moon. That's not abstract, it asks the wearer to remember a specific quality of evening light, that luminous quality that summer evenings carry in warmer latitudes. The composition responds with pomegranate, mandarin, and jasmine, three notes that layer to create a scent story which unfolds over time on the skin, shifting as the hours pass and the evening progresses. Each note emerges in its turn, creating an evolving experience that mirrors the gradual transition from twilight to night.
The note architecture presents an interesting progression. Blackcurrant brings a tart, acidic quality that adds brightness to the opening. Pomegranate contributes juicy depth without any syrupy heaviness, a nuance that gives the fragrance complexity. Mandarin adds brightness, while jasmine weaves through the composition and provides richness. White amber introduces warmth that lingers through the heart of the fragrance. The base incorporates patchouli, which maintains an earthy quality that grounds the lighter notes above it without overwhelming them.
The evolution
Super Moon opens fruity and immediate, blackcurrant arriving first, followed quickly by mandarin's sweeter notes and pomegranate's juicy depth. The first fifteen minutes are the brightest phase, that initial rush of fruit in full force, with sillage that announces itself early. By the second hour, jasmine and white amber take over the heart, and the tartness begins to recede without disappearing entirely. The fruit doesn't vanish, it breathes underneath the florals, keeping the middle phase from becoming too restrained. The white amber adds warmth that develops gradually, giving the heart phase a softer character even as the jasmine provides depth. This transition rewards attention, as the fragrance shifts from that initial bright burst toward something more nuanced. The drydown follows, carrying the fragrance into its final hours with a different but equally compelling character.
Cultural impact
Super Moon, from the 2022 Summer Journey Collection, explores a different register from some of the house's other releases: not the texture of materials but the quality of light. The fruity-floral structure presents an interesting proposition within the niche fragrance landscape, offering a scent that feels appropriate to warm weather while maintaining the house's characteristic approach to composition. It presents an accessible entry point for those new to the house's work, while offering enough complexity to hold the attention of more experienced fragrance enthusiasts.
