The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Entry Level Collection was conceived as a bridge. A way to bring Bortnikoff's layered, material-forward philosophy to someone who hadn't yet fallen down the niche rabbit hole. Millennium Santal, a 2025 collaboration between Dmitry Bortnikoff and Chris Maurice, became the collection's anchor, built around sandalwood as the primary note rather than a supporting player. The idea: take everything the house learned about rich natural materials and translate it into something immediately legible. This means focusing on clarity and accessibility, making the core identity of the brand approachable without diluting what makes it distinctive.
Sandalwood usually arrives late in a fragrance, a quiet base that supports flashier top notes. Millennium Santal inverts that structure. The sandalwood heart, accompanied by geranium, lily of the valley, and cedarwood, forms the most textured part of the composition, not a cleanup crew for the drydown. It's a compositional choice that rewards patience: the opening is bright and pleasant, but the real story unfolds in the middle hours.
The evolution
The opening hits like a burst of citrus peel, bergamot, mandarin, lemon, orange, with jasmine softening the edges just enough. Then sandalwood takes over. Not gradually. It arrives and stays. The floral heart (lily of the valley, geranium) layers underneath, giving the woodiness a green, slightly powdery texture that prevents it from going static. The drydown is where this earns its keep: tobacco, vanilla, oakmoss, amber. Warm, powdery, close to the skin. The scent continues to evolve over hours, with the sandalwood foundation providing a consistent structure throughout the wear.
Cultural impact
Millennium Santal marks a shift in the house's approach, prioritizing clarity and accessibility over complexity. The Entry Level Collection translates the brand's philosophy of material authenticity into something more approachable, letting sandalwood take center stage as the primary note rather than a supporting element. This framing emphasizes approachability while preserving the brand's commitment to quality materials.
