The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name says everything. Oud Cologne is exactly that, oud reframed as a cologne, not a statement. Dmitry Bortnikoff created it for a specific kind of wearer: someone drawn to the idea of oud but put off by its heavier expressions. The cologne structure was the vehicle, allowing the wood's complex character to emerge through a different lens. The result is an approachable take on oud that respects its depth while remaining fresh from the opening through the drydown.
The choice of Thai oud over heavier Middle Eastern varieties defines this fragrance's character. Where traditional oud fragrances often lead with resinous intensity, Oud Cologne opens with citrus brightness and lets the oud emerge gradually as a warm, grounding base. This restraint allows the composition to feel light without losing the depth that makes oud distinctive. The addition of white ambergris and Siam benzoin amplifies the warmth without adding weight, creating a composition that feels cohesive from first spray to final drydown.
The evolution
The first minutes belong entirely to citrus, sharp, almost tart, the kind of brightness that wakes you up. Grapefruit and bitter orange lead, with bergamot softening the edges and pink pepper adding a faint prickle. The juniper and ginger arrive, shifting the energy from sharp to aromatic. The citrus does not disappear, it cools. The heart develops quietly: pine needles and geranium bring green, herbal depth. Rose appears without fanfare, more structural than romantic. By the second hour, the oud announces itself. Not heavy, warm, slightly medicinal. White ambergris adds a mineral sweetness that delays into the resinous base: benzoin, tonka, vetiver. The drydown is intimate. Close skin, not a room. Settling into something that smells like skin-warmed wood and faint citrus peel. The next morning, there's a faint trace on fabric, clean, green.
Cultural impact
Oud Cologne occupies a specific position: oud made approachable. The citrus-forward structure makes it wearable in ways that heavier oud attars are not. It offers a fresh perspective on the ingredient, opening with brightness before revealing the depth that oud lovers appreciate. The composition manages to feel both light and substantive, an appealing combination that distinguishes it from more traditional interpretations.
