Why it exists.
The beginning
Symphonie de Néroli arrived in 2019 as part of Bortnikoff's fourth collection. The flower had been a perfumer's reference point for centuries, but neroli as the central note in a Bortnikoff composition was a choice worth noting. Citrus opens the composition, neroli sits at the heart, and underneath it all, the base materials carry enough weight to keep the whole thing from drifting off into the air. The citrus top is bright and almost startling, with clementine, bergamot, lemon, and lime all present at once rather than layered one at a time. The neroli that follows is the green, slightly bitter Tunisian variety, honeyed but with a metallic edge that keeps it from feeling candied.
What makes the structure unusual is the layering of two vetivers, Indian and Java, alongside a neroli heart. The base then layers four balsams and resins (Peru balsam, tolu balsam, ambergris, oakmoss) with Thai oud and Virginia cedar, giving the citrus top something serious to land on. The Tunisian neroli carries a honeyed character with that metallic edge, and the jasmine sambac here is restrained rather than opulent. The two vetivers arrive together and root the composition. From the third hour onward, the base asserts itself.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are almost aggressive in their brightness. Clementine, bergamot, lemon, and lime arrive together, no single one hiding behind another, and the effect is closer to biting into cold fruit than to a polite cologne opening. Within thirty minutes the citrus recedes just enough for jasmine sambac to surface, but it stays restrained. This is not a white floral explosion.
