The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fantasia Mermaid arrived in 2019 as Anna Sui's dive into an underwater world, the kind of fantasy the brand builds its entire aesthetic around. The brief was simple: a scent that felt like carefree sensuality, aquatic and fruity and floral all at once. Perfumer Christian Provenzano structured it around a bright citrus opening, a translucent floral heart, and a honey-vanilla base that echoes the brand's nostalgic, fantastical sensibility. The Pop Art bottle does the rest, a mermaid silhouette in candy-store colors that announces the mood before you even spray.
What makes this composition work is the tension between its layers. The citrus top, blood orange, mandarin, cardamom, arrives loud and sunny, almost synthetic in its brightness. Then the heart softens everything: lychee brings a translucent fruitiness, peony adds a quiet floral elegance, jasmine threads through with warmth. The base is where Fantasia Mermaid earns its name. Honey doesn't just sweeten, it adds depth, a golden richness that holds the florals together. Vanilla keeps it warm. White woods keep it from becoming a dessert. The whole thing moves from cool to warm to intimate, like a swimmer drying in the sun.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately: blood orange and mandarin create a citrus wave that's bright, almost effervescent. Cardamom sits underneath, adding a warm spice that prevents it from reading as cleaning product. Within fifteen minutes, the citrus softens and lychee takes over, that translucent, slightly sweet fruitiness that makes the heart feel aquatic without relying on the usual aquatic accords. Peony arrives next, soft and powdery, followed by jasmine that adds a touch of richness. The drydown is where the magic settles. Honey emerges slowly, golden and warm, then vanilla wraps everything in a soft sweetness that lingers close to the skin. White woods provide just enough structure to keep the sweetness from overwhelming. The result is a warm, intimate trail that lasts through the afternoon, not loud, but present. On some skin, it fades faster in the first hour; on most, it holds steady for six to eight hours, transitioning from bright opening to quiet warmth without ever feeling disjointed.
Cultural impact
Fantasia Mermaid holds a specific place in the Anna Sui lineup, the most playful, the most overtly whimsical. Community reception splits on the citrus opening, which some find sharp, but the honey-vanilla drydown consistently earns praise. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who chose joy over composure. The bottle design, a mermaid silhouette in candy-store colors, drives collector interest and Instagram appeal, while the scent itself stands apart from the brand's more romantic rose-centered releases.
