The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Night of Fancy landed in 2008 from Benoist Lapouza, the perfumer behind several Anna Sui scents. The brief was simple: capture the thrill of getting dressed up for a night out, not the performance of it, but the quiet confidence that comes from wearing something you chose for yourself. Lapouza built it around a fruity-floral structure, starting with blueberry and wild strawberry for brightness, then layering in Stephanotis and Jasmine absolute for depth, and anchoring it all with milk and Cashmeran for that soft, worn-in quality. It was the successor to Flight of Fancy, carrying the same romantic sensibility but pushing into more intimate territory.
What makes Night of Fancy unusual is the milk note sitting alongside frankincense. Milk is sweet, soft, lactonic. Frankincense is resinous, smoky, almost sacred. Together they create a base that smells both modern and ancient, like something your grandmother might have worn, but with a contemporary edge. Cashmeran adds warmth without weight, letting the fragrance stay close to the skin rather than projecting loudly. The Stephanotis, a flower often overlooked in Western perfumery, brings a jasmine-like quality with hints of gardenia, keeping the heart floral but not predictable. It's a composition that rewards attention rather than announcing itself.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately with blueberry and wild strawberry, bright, tart, juicy. Grapefruit leaf adds a green, slightly bitter edge that keeps the sweetness from becoming cloying. Within minutes, the florals take over: Stephanotis and Jasmine absolute bloom together, creating a white floral heart that's soft but present. The drydown is where it gets interesting. Milk emerges slowly, smoothing the florals and adding a creamy warmth. Frankincense appears in the base, adding a subtle resinous quality that prevents the milk from smelling too sweet. Cashmeran extends the wear, keeping everything close to the skin for four to six hours. By the end, it's a quiet whisper, skin-warm, intimate, and distinctly personal.
Cultural impact
Night of Fancy is part of Anna Sui's broader fragrance philosophy: nostalgic romanticism with a playful edge. The brand has always been about building fantasy worlds through color, texture, and scent. Night of Fancy fits perfectly into this, it's sweet and youthful but with enough depth to feel personal rather than generic. The 2008 release reflects the era's love of fruity-floral fragrances, but the milk and frankincense base gives it a distinct character that sets it apart from similar scents of the time.
