The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Anna Sui's Romantica line began in 2015 as a romantic garden display. Romantica Exotica, launched in 2016, shifted the setting entirely, from a garden in full bloom to a tropical island dreamed up during Sui's actual holiday in Tahiti. Perfumer Jérôme Epinette of Robertet created the fragrance, building a composition that opens with the sharp brightness of citrus and blackcurrant, the initial impression that feels like stepping into warm island air, before softening into a floral heart of jasmine and lotus. The combination creates an immediate freshness that captures the vibrancy of tropical surroundings. The name says it all: it's a feeling captured in scent, packaged in the whimsical turquoise bottle adorned with gold roses and dragonflies.
The interesting move here is the pairing of lotus and bitter orange blossom in the heart. Lotus is cool, aquatic, almost meditative. Bitter orange blossom adds a sharper, more aromatic edge that cuts through the sweetness. Together, they keep the heart from going fully sweet. The base leans into gardenia and sandalwood, which is a creamy-woody combination that reads as warm without ever getting heavy. Cottonwood, a poplar absolute, adds a subtle, almost airy woodiness that rounds the drydown into something close and intimate rather than projecting and bold.
The evolution
The opening lands bright and immediate, grapefruit and lemon arrive together, the kind of sharp citrus hit that feels like stepping out of a shaded terrace into full island sun. Blackcurrant underneath adds a slight tart-berry depth, preventing it from being just a generic citrus burst. Jasmine emerges first in the floral phase, creamy and familiar, then lotus joins with its cool, aquatic quality, a hand-off that feels almost seamless, like the brightness doesn't disappear so much as it softens. The drydown is where Romantica Exotica earns its name. Gardenia arrives late but stays long, bringing a lactonic warmth that pairs beautifully with sandalwood's milky softness. Cottonwood lingers in the background, adding an airy woodiness that keeps the base from going heavy, creating a gentle, intimate finish rather than a bold projection.
Cultural impact
Romantica Exotica landed in 2016 as Anna Sui's tropical pivot on the Romantica concept, shifting from the original's garden romanticism to island escape and exotic fruits. The fragrance opens with bright citrus and tropical fruit, transitioning into a lush floral heart of jasmine and lotus before settling into a warm, creamy drydown. It's the kind of fragrance that works best when you want to feel good rather than make a statement, a cheerful companion that brings a sunny disposition to everyday moments.
