The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jérôme Epinette composed Fantasia in 2017 as part of Anna Sui's ongoing fragrance line, translating a runway theme into something you could wear. The brief appears to have centered on the fantastical, the whimsical, the kind of evening where anything feels possible. Epinette worked with that narrative, building a composition around pink pomelo and woody base notes that could hold both sweetness and mystery. The bottle, crowned with a small unicorn figurine, tells you everything about the intent: this is a fragrance that doesn't take itself too seriously but takes its playful character completely seriously.
Pink pomelo is the star. It carries more floral nuance than standard grapefruit, giving the opening a candied quality that doesn't tip into synthetic. The pink pepper adds a gentle spice, warming without heat. In the heart, orange blossom brings a bitter-floral elegance that cuts through the sweetness, while raspberry praliné adds an edible richness that makes the florals feel almost tangible. Violet and orchid round out the middle with a powdery softness. The combination of gourmand and floral shouldn't work, but the restraint in the sillage keeps it from becoming cluttered.
The evolution
Fantasia opens bright. Pink pomelo arrives immediately, tart and juicy, underscored by the gentle warmth of pink pepper. No subtlety here. The grapefruit cuts clean, no harsh edges. Within the first hour, the citrus begins to soften. Raspberry praliné emerges, sweet and almost edible, followed by orange blossom's floral warmth. The violet and orchid phase follows, pulling the fragrance closer to the skin, adding a powdery softness that makes it feel intimate rather than projecting. By hour three, the base arrives. Himalayan cedar and cypress. Woody, clean, slightly dry. The pomelo is still there, but barely. On fabric, the drydown holds much longer. Some say it lingers until the next morning, the cedar revealing itself then. Four to six hours overall, with performance varying by surface.
Cultural impact
Fantasia occupies a particular space in the Anna Sui lineup, sweet, approachable, undeniably playful. The unicorn figurine on the bottle isn't decorative. It's the entire philosophy in miniature. This is a fragrance that wants to make you smile before you even smell it. Wearers gravitate toward it for its accessible sweetness, its easy versatility, the kind of scent that feels like a treat without asking anything in return. The community ratings suggest strong approval for packaging and overall scent profile. Some find it fades to a skin scent after an hour. Others report solid 4-6 hour performance, particularly on fabric.
