The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The fifth addition to Anna Sui's Fantasia collection arrived in 2023, and it carries the collection's Pop Art energy into olfactory form. The packaging tells you everything: four different bottles, each one a surprise, inspired by Pop Art color palettes. Perfumer Jérôme Epinette structures this as a fruity-gourmand composition, keeping the collection's playful spirit intact while building warmth through cotton candy, ambroxan, and driftwood. The Fantasia line leans into whimsy with a sweet, approachable character that makes you want to reach for it again. The cotton candy note is soft and powdery, like spun sugar dissolving on the tongue, while ambroxan adds a clean, skin-like warmth that feels almost intimate.
The top notes do the heavy lifting here. Raspberry, jabuticaba, and blackcurrant create an almost excessive berry sweetness at the opening, like biting into a piece of candy that's too brightly colored to be real. But there's intention behind it. This is calculated sweetness, not accidental. The berry sweetness is the main character, and it doesn't try to hide it. The heart notes of cyclamen and jasmine sambac add depth, preventing it from becoming just another sweet fragrance. These florals give it something to lean into as the sweetness settles.
The evolution
The opening is all about that berry brightness. Raspberry, blackcurrant, and jabuticaba create an immediate impact, the kind that makes you stop and pay attention. It's bright, it's sweet, and it's doing the most. But it doesn't stay there. Within minutes, the cotton candy and ambroxan kick in, softening the sweetness into something more intimate and skin-close. The sillage stays moderate throughout, never projecting too far from the skin. By the drydown, it's become that warm, sweet impression you get when someone leans in close. The ambroxan and driftwood create a subtle warmth that lingers for hours, with the cotton candy sweetness staying close rather than projecting outward. The overall effect is that of a well-balanced fruity-gourmand that moves from bright to intimate, never losing its playful edge as the notes evolve throughout the wearing experience.
Cultural impact
Fantasia Pop Surprise strikes a balance between sweet enough to appeal to a broad audience and restrained enough not to alienate those with gentler sensibilities. Reviewers have highlighted this equilibrium as a strength, noting how the fragrance manages to be both inviting and approachable. The moderate sillage means it works best in intimate settings rather than filling a room, making it practical for everyday wear. The warm, sweet impression created by the cotton candy, ambroxan, and driftwood combination makes it a versatile choice for those who appreciate playful, colorful sensibilities.
