The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Rock Me! Summer of Love arrived in 2010 as a seasonal companion to the original Rock Me! fragrance. The brief was simple on paper: capture the spirit of the 1960s Summer of Love movement. Music, fashion, freedom. A whole generation convinced that sweetness and self-expression were acts of rebellion. Anna Sui translated that ethos into a light, easygoing scent designed for warm weather and everyday wear. The outer carton features a butterfly symbolizing freedom, with peace signs and exotic flowers framing a color palette of pink and turquoise blue. The bottle itself is shaped like a guitar, engraved with that same butterfly. Because of course it is. This is a brand that has never outgrown dress-up, and Summer of Love wears that philosophy like a headband full of daisies.
The note structure leans into contrasts that shouldn't work but somehow do. Hyssop is the outlier here, an aromatic herb more common in colognes than in womenswear. It gives the opening an herbal, almost camphorated lift that keeps the bergamot from feeling like a standard citrus opener. Then the freesia and water lily take over, two flowers that share a certain cool, watery quality. Neither is particularly loud. Together, they create a heart that reads as mist rather than bloom. White peach bridges the gap between the aquatic and the sweet, giving the mid-section just enough flesh to feel substantial without tipping into gourmand territory. It's a carefully balanced act of restraint.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and crisp. Bergamot and geranium arrive together, sharp and almost medicinal in their cleanliness. Then the hyssop shifts it, introducing an herbal, slightly camphorated note that keeps things from feeling like a standard fresh fragrance. The bergamot fades first, within the first hour. The geranium and hyssop hold a bit longer, maybe ninety minutes, before the heart takes over. Freesia and water lily arrive soft, almost dewy. They don't announce themselves. They hover. The peach note in the heart is the surprise element, adding a sweet, fleshy quality that keeps the mid-section from going completely colorless. Two to three hours in, the freesia begins to fade. The water lily holds longer, maintaining that cool, slightly aquatic quality while the peach lingers underneath. The drydown arrives quietly. Sandalwood grounds the peach sweetness while musky rose and ambergris form a warm, skin-close base. Lasts three to four hours on most skin types. The sillage stays moderate throughout, close to the body rather than filling a room.
Cultural impact
Rock Me! Summer of Love has earned its place as a reliable warm-weather option for those who want something pleasant and uncomplicated. It's not trying to reinvent anything. It's trying to smell like a good day. The fragrance draws comparisons to lighter fare, though its advocates appreciate it precisely for what it is: sunny, optimistic, and easy to wear.
