The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lucky Wish arrived in spring 2016 as the latest chapter in Anna Sui's Secret Wish collection, which began with the original in 2005. Mathieu Nardin took the collection's established fairy-tale language in a new direction, creating a fragrance that captures anticipation and gentle magic. The Secret Wish line has always been about wishes, fairy-tale imagery, and glittering wonder, and Lucky Wish leans into that fantasy with a delicate, dreamy character all its own. The fragrance reads like a held breath before something wonderful happens, inviting the wearer into a world where optimism and sweetness take center stage.
What makes Lucky Wish interesting isn't any single note but the way Nardin handles contrast. The opening hits cold, almost aggressively bright citrus that feels more like January than July. Then it softens. The bamboo note is the quiet surprise here, adding a green, almost aquatic quality that stops the florals from becoming syrupy. Orange blossom and orchid pull the composition toward the Asian-floral register without tipping into those territory clichés. By the time sandalwood and musk arrive, the fragrance has traveled from sharp morning light to something you exhale before sleep.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: frosted citrus, cold air, the kind of brightness that makes you squint. Tangerine and iced lemon arrive sharp and slightly tart, clearing the room before settling. The citrus softens and freesia begins to surface, followed by orchid and orange blossom. The bamboo adds a green, slightly aquatic undertone that keeps the florals from becoming heavy. As the hours pass, the florals have mellowed into something intimate, musk, creamy sandalwood, and crystal amber that stays close to the skin rather than projecting outward. This is when Lucky Wish becomes a skin scent, settling into a quiet warmth that lingers gently on the skin.
Cultural impact
Lucky Wish fits squarely in the accessible, sweet-floral category that appeals to a broad fragrance audience. It's the kind of fragrance that smells immediately familiar, not because it's derivative, but because it hits the right notes for everyday wear: optimistic, pleasant, and easy to reach for. The Secret Wish line has built a following among those drawn to its whimsical positioning, and Lucky Wish remains one of the more wearable entries in that collection. The soft lavender bottle with golden birds reinforces the fairy-tale sensibility, inviting the wearer into a world of gentle wishes and quiet magic.
