The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
That childhood moment of held breath before you reveal your hand. Maison Matine translated it into fragrance. Perfumers Marine Mercé and Florian Gallo built the composition around that tension: a bright citrus opening that reads like a clear morning, then a heart of magnolia and orange blossom that starts to suggest something is moving underneath. The drydown settles into Virginia cedarwood and Haitian vetiver, still fresh, still green, but with a depth that grounds the experience.
Cascalone adds an aquatic shimmer to the citrus opening, not the typical sharp burst, but a quality that feels almost crystalline. The heart of magnolia and apple tempers the brightness with softness, while Guatemalan cardamom introduces a warm spice that doesn't compete with the florals, it supports them. The base is where the composition earns its name: Virginia cedarwood and Haitian vetiver together create a green woodiness that feels clean without being austere. White musk and moss keep the drydown close to the skin, present but not announcing itself.
The evolution
The opening announces itself without apology. Bergamot, grapefruit, and Italian yellow mandarin arrive together, effervescent and declarative. Cascalone adds a watery shimmer underneath, the citrus doesn't just sparkle, it shimmers. The heart takes over: magnolia and apple round the edges, the citrus settles into something softer, and the floral sweetness becomes the story. The transition is the slow realization that the initial brightness has become something warmer. The base arrives: Virginia cedarwood and Haitian vetiver settle into a clean, green woodiness that lingers close to the skin. White moss and white musk add texture without weight.
Cultural impact
Shifumi is part of the Night Fever Collection, Maison Matine's 2025 release. The house has built its identity on thematic collections that treat fragrance as cultural commentary. The composition leans into a balance of citrus, florals, and woody notes, offering something that feels both bright and grounded. Wearers gravitate toward it for daytime use and warmer months, and the woody base gives it enough versatility to transition into evening settings.
