The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Brocard, founded in Russia in 1864 as a luxury soap shop, has spent over a century refining the art of balanced, story-driven fragrance. Water Ivy was created in 2021 by French-trained perfumer Patrice Martin, who drew inspiration from a specific sensory memory: the moment after a spring shower when water-slick ivy clings to stone walls and the air carries a cool, mineral freshness. Rather than defaulting to a typical green fragrance, Martin layered aquatic notes with bright bergamot and soft peach to capture the rain itself before the plants took over.
Martin chose aquatic notes not for their trend appeal but for their ability to replicate the sensation of mineral water on skin. Ivy provides authenticity, sourced for its slightly bitter, realistic leaf character rather than a generalized green impression. The white musk acts as a bridge between the cool opening and the earthy base, ensuring the fragrance feels cohesive throughout its development. Peony and bellflower were selected to keep the florals feminine and fresh rather than indolic or heavy, honoring the rain-washed aesthetic that defines the entire composition.
The evolution
The fragrance moves through its notes like a rain shower progressing across a garden. Aquatic notes and bergamot arrive first, crisp and immediate, followed by peach softening the entrance. Within minutes, ivy emerges as the structural backbone while jasmine, peony, and bellflower weave through the green. As the florals settle, white musk adds warmth and the moss appears, grounding everything in a damp earthiness that lingers for hours without becoming heavy or dirty.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 debut, Water Ivy has found a niche among collectors who appreciate subtle, nature‑inspired fragrances that avoid flashiness. Wearers often cite its fresh‑green vibe as ideal for spring outings and office wear, noting its moderate sillage lets it sit close without overwhelming. It is frequently mentioned alongside other aquatic‑green perfumes from the early 2020s, cementing its place as a quiet, refined favorite in the contemporary niche market.
