The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
François Demachy created Mirto di Panarea Limited Edition as a love letter to a tiny volcanic island in the Aeolian chain, just off Sicily's coast. Panarea is the kind of place that resists description, barely two square kilometers, older than tourism, smothered in Mediterranean maquis. Myrtle grows wild there, scrubby and insistent, as it has for centuries. The fragrance captures the island's mineral and green character, with the sea serving as atmosphere rather than a listed note. The Blu Mediterraneo collection has always aimed to bottle specific Italian coastal moments, and this edition narrows the focus to one island's particular wildness. The scent opens with bright, herbaceous myrtle that feels both fresh and grounded, like the plant itself growing stubbornly along rocky paths.
Myrtle commands the opening, its green, aromatic presence immediate and assured. Basil's herbal bite backs it, lending a sharper, more dynamic edge to the top accord. The heart introduces jasmine and damask rose, their floral character softened by proximity to sun-warmed vegetation, the effect more atmospheric than traditional floral perfume. The mastic note, resinous and slightly piney, a material native to Mediterranean maquis, anchors the composition without the heaviness typically associated with resin.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and immediate. Italian lemon and Calabrian bergamot arrive first, then myrtle and basil push through with an herbal insistence that says this isn't going to be polite. Within fifteen minutes, the citrus recedes and the sea notes take over, not aquatic in the synthetic sense, but the smell of salt moving across warm rock. The jasmine and damask rose appear quietly in the heart, more atmospheric than declarative. By the second hour, the juniper and cedarwood emerge, and the mastic gives the drydown a faintly resinous, Mediterranean warmth that lingers close to the skin. The whole arc takes about four to six hours on most skin types, intimate sillage throughout, present to the wearer, discovered by anyone who leans in.
Cultural impact
The Blu Mediterraneo collection includes Mirto di Panarea Limited Edition, a myrtle-forward fragrance that stands apart within its family. The dominant myrtle note creates an herbal, less overtly aquatic character than some of the collection's other expressions, offering a different take on Mediterranean inspiration. For those drawn to Mediterranean perfumery but seeking something beyond the typical marine and citrus trajectory, this edition provides an alternative path. The myrtle-forward structure captures the aromatic complexity of the Mediterranean maquis, bringing a wilder, more botanical dimension to the collection's coastal vision.
