The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Verbena carries a particular clarity of purpose. When Eva Škovranová launched her Bratislava-based house 1907, Verbena emerged as a focused release built around the herb that gives it its name. The scent poses a simple question and commits to answering it: what does lemon verbena actually smell like when you let it lead the composition? There is no mythology layered over the formula, no elaborate backstory. The composition stays close to its subject, treating the plant as the central character rather than a supporting note buried beneath louder accents. Verbena takes an honest approach to a single botanical, and the result is a fragrance that reads as transparent in intent. You smell the herb, you smell what surrounds it, and nothing pretends to be anything other than what it is.
The composition layers Brazilian orange, Calabrian bergamot, and Chinese litsea cubeba alongside the verbena to build a citrus character that goes well beyond simple freshness. Caraway and geranium introduce an aromatic, slightly spicy thread that keeps the opening from collapsing into lemonade territory. The heart introduces Egyptian jasmine and lily of the valley for a white floral softness, while heliotrope and orange blossom in the base give the drydown its characteristic powdery, almond-like warmth.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are all verbena, litsea cubeba, and bergamot, bright and almost sharp, like tearing fresh leaves in sunlight. Lemongrass hums underneath. Then the caraway arrives, slightly green and spiced, and the citrus softens as jasmine and lily of the valley push forward. The heart holds for about 2 hours, powdery and warm, more intimate than the opening promised. By hour 3, heliotrope takes over: sweet, almond-adjacent, almost marzipan. The orange blossom base keeps the florals alive without ever returning to the sharp citrus. On fabric the next morning, it reads softer still, a clean, soapy trace of powder and faint citrus. The progression from a bright, almost bitter herbal opening to a soft, creamy drydown gives the scent a satisfying shape over the course of a wear.
Cultural impact
Verbena holds appeal for wearers drawn to herbal and citrus-forward compositions, offering an alternative character that reads distinctly from the heavier orientals and ambers dominating much of the niche market. The fragrance's commitment to a single botanical subject, supported by a thoughtful cast of supporting notes, makes it a point of interest for those who appreciate restraint and specificity in perfumery.
