The beginning
Leather on Skin arrived in 2024 as part of 1907's Fragment collection, a series that breaks down scent into single dominant ideas rather than grand narratives. The theme here is the oldest one in perfumery: leather against warmth, material against body. The composition is built around that friction, the moment a scent stops being an object and becomes part of someone. The leather accord opens with a supple, almost buttery softness, the kind that recalls a well-worn glove rather than a new saddle. Beneath it, a quiet warmth rises, something between bare skin and the heat trapped under fabric. As the hours pass, the animalic edge of the leather mellows into something drier and more intimate, a suede-like hush that clings close rather than projecting outward.
What makes this composition work is the tension between its floral heart and its animal base. Jasmine, rose, and lily of the valley soften the leather and oud, preventing either from tipping into something costume-like. Pink pepper and cardamom add lift at the top, the kind of spice that wakes the nose before the heavier materials settle in. The result reads as skin-adjacent rather than accessory-like.
The evolution
The opening lands bright and almost citrus-warm, bergamot and cardamom giving it a brief energy that feels like a doorway, not an arrival. Pink pepper adds a flicker of heat, something between cold air and warm skin. Within ten minutes the florals begin to surface, but they don't bloom so much as fold inward. Jasmine arrives quiet, rose arrives drier than expected, and oud sits beneath both like a dark floor. This is where the composition starts to feel intentional. The middle phase holds the most density: leather begins to emerge from underneath the florals, not as a jacket note but as something more textured, almost suede-like. Patchouli grounds the heart with an earthiness that keeps the florals from floating off. After two hours the base takes over completely. Cedarwood arrives woody and dry, not pencil-shavings but more like the inside of something wooden that's been closed for a while. Vetiver adds a cool green edge that keeps the leather honest, and white musk settles everything into a close, warm wash.

Within niche circles, the Fragment collection draws attention for its willingness to pare leather down to its most elemental expression. Leather on Skin treats the material as something close and personal, the kind of scent that reads less as an accessory and more as an extension of the body wearing it.
