The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Koala arrived in 2020 from Spyros Drosopoulos, a perfumer working from a Zoologist brief that asked a deceptively simple question: what does an Australian eucalyptus forest smell like? But Zoologist does not do literal, the koala is the concept, the character, the mood. Drosopoulos reached for eucalyptus and pine to establish the forest canopy, layering honey and mimosa for the softer floral qualities beneath. The result captures the atmosphere of the habitat rather than the animal itself.
Drosopoulos treats the eucalyptus forest as a complete olfactory ecosystem, where each note supports the others like trees sharing a canopy. The fresh, green opening represents the forest air, the tea and incense heart evoke the forest floor and its mysteries, and the woody, musky base suggests the earth itself. Honey and mimosa provide unexpected sweetness, preventing the composition from becoming purely austere. Vanilla and amber offer warmth that invites wear rather than intimidates. The note structure creates a journey from clarity to depth to comfort, each phase distinct yet connected.
The evolution
The opening bursts with eucalyptus and pine, their aromatic oils creating an immediate sense of place. Honey and mimosa arrive to soften the intensity, adding sweetness that prevents harshness. As the top notes recede, black tea takes center stage with its distinctive tannic character, supported by geranium and vetiver that deepen the earthy quality. Incense weaves through the heart, lending an almost ritualistic atmosphere. The transition to the drydown reveals sandalwood, amber, and vanilla gradually emerging, their warmth replacing the initial green clarity. Musk and oakmoss complete the arc, grounding everything in a lasting woodland presence.
Cultural impact
Koala finds itself in a curious position among Zoologist's more extreme offerings. While Civet and Squid push into animalic and aquatic territory, Koala leans green and wearable, a gateway, some say, for curious newcomers who want to understand what Zoologist does without committing to the stranger end of the catalog. It has its own adherents, though. Wearers describe it as the kind of fragrance that earns second glances once the eucalyptus settles and the warmth underneath reveals itself. The 2020 launch came at a moment when green fragrances were gaining renewed attention, though Koala stands apart from the typical rain-and-grass fare, its camphorated opening keeps it unusual, its drydown keeps it human.
