The Story
Why it exists.
Zoologist Perfumes doesn't do half-measures with its concepts. For Chipmunk, the brief was autumn itself, not a mood board, not an emotion, but the actual season translated into scent. The official story follows chipmunks scurrying across the forest floor, cheeks stuffed with nuts, racing against falling leaves and biting snow to line their burrows. It's a story about abundance and urgency, about the sweetness of the harvest and the warmth of getting home before winter arrives. Pia Long was tasked with making that narrative olfactory, and she reached for quince, hazelnut, and a forest floor's worth of wood to do it.

The Beginning
What makes Chipmunk interesting as a composition isn't any single material, it's the arc. The top opens with juicy fruit and bright spice, almost playful. The heart shifts into something toasted and warm, hazelnut and oak absolute doing the heavy lifting. Then the base arrives: benzoin and animalic notes adding a depth that feels almost underground, warm and close, like burrowing in. The animalic notes aren't a shock element, they're the payoff. The forest floor has life under it, and this fragrance knows it.
The Evolution
The opening arrives quickly, citrus brightness with a green bite. Quince and mandarin orange hit first, then the cardamom and pink pepper add some structure underneath. Within minutes, the hazelnut and oak absolute take over. This is the heart of Chipmunk: a warm, slightly toasted quality that smells like stepping into autumn. The chamomile and fir balsam add depth, a sense of the damp forest floor beneath the warmth. The drydown is where Chipmunk earns its name. The benzoin and animalic notes come forward, and suddenly the fragrance feels warm in a different way, closer, more personal. The cedarwood, guaiac wood, patchouli, and vetiver form a woody base that doesn't project far but lingers close to the skin. Lasts a full workday, with moderate sillage that stays intimate rather than announcing itself. On fabric the next day, a faint warmth remains, the benzoin outlasting everything else. On skin, it settles into something warm and close, like a burrow.
Cultural Impact
Chipmunk stands out in the Zoologist lineup for its approachability. Where fragrances like Civet lean into challenging animalic territory, Chipmunk offers warmth and comfort without sacrificing artistic intent. The 2021 release found an audience among niche fragrance enthusiasts who wanted something cozy but not generic, a fragrance that felt autumnal without relying on the usual pumpkin spice associations. Wearers consistently describe it as comforting, with a hazelnut quality that sets it apart from more mainstream fall fragrances. It's become a quiet favorite for those who appreciate the Zoologist concept but want something they can actually wear daily.
The House
Canada · Est. 2013
Zoologist Perfumes is a Canadian niche fragrance house based in Toronto. The brand creates artistic perfumes named after animals, translating the idiosyncrasies of the animal kingdom into scent compositions. Founded by video game designer Victor Wong in 2013, the collection includes unusual and conceptual fragrances that range from the sweet (Hummingbird, Bee) to the animalic (Civet) to the marine (Squid). Each fragrance represents a collaboration between Wong and independent perfumers who bring their own creative vision to the animal-inspired concepts. The brand has released over 20 perfumes since its founding, with notable releases including Harvest Mouse (2023), King Cobra (2024), and Rabbit (2024). Zoologist's ethical stance is central to its identity: all products use synthetic musks rather than animal-derived ingredients.

Autumn compressed into sound: warm guitar tones like sunlight through russet leaves, brushed percussion like footsteps on a forest floor, and a bass line that stays close and grounded, almost burrowing. The overall feeling is intimate and unhurried, the warmth of making it inside before the cold arrives.
