Pia Long
Pia Long never took the conventional route into perfumery. Born in Finland and based in Buckinghamshire, she spent her teenage years in the 1980s selling fragrance on a shop floor. Then came eight years training as a make-up artist and hair stylist, working across film, television, fashion, and theatre. She graduated in 1996, but something kept pulling her toward scent. In 2006, she began her formal training as a perfumer. The transition from cosmetics to fragrance composition proved less radical than it might seem: both trades demand an acute understanding of how materials interact with skin, how they age, how they tell a story. By the time she completed her training, she had developed a rare fluency across multiple fragrance categories. She co-founded Olfiction alongside Nick Gilbert, building a consultancy that works across the full spectrum of the industry, from raw material suppliers to brands and retailers. Over fifteen years of practice, she has created hundreds of fragrances, each one shaped by the same curiosity that once drove her to study faces and forms before it ever turned to raw materials.
