Heritage
A house, in its own words
Leo Crabtree launched BeauFort London after a brief experiment with a men’s grooming product. The venture quickly shifted toward a more esoteric direction, inspired by the layered history of the United Kingdom. Early interviews describe Crabtree’s background as a former whiskey distiller, a seasoned musician, and a writer fascinated by archival narratives. In 2015 the house released its first two fragrances, Vi Et Armis and Coeur De Noir, both of which referenced historic battles and clandestine societies. The following year saw the debut of Fathom V and Lignum Vitae, compositions that introduced marine and woody notes drawn from obscure botanical sources. Iron Duke (2017) paid homage to a 19th‑century British naval hero, while Rake & Ruin (2018) explored the decadence of Victorian excess. Terror & Magnificence (2019) deepened the brand’s reputation for dark, atmospheric storytelling, a theme that continued with Acrasia (2022), Absent Presence (2023) and Cape Wrath (2024). Throughout its growth, BeauFort has remained a one‑person operation, with Crabtree overseeing formulation, sourcing, and packaging. The studio’s Valencia Street location doubles as a tasting space where enthusiasts can meet the creator during regular “Scent with BeauFort” evenings. By maintaining a small‑scale, hands‑on approach, the house preserves the intimacy of its early days while steadily expanding its narrative catalogue. BeauFort’s creative vision treats perfume as a written page, each bottle a chapter that captures a moment in British lore. The house rejects mass‑market trends, opting instead for ingredients that feel both historical and unexpected. Crabtree often cites his background in music and literature as a guide: he composes scents the way he would arrange a symphony, layering motifs until a coherent story emerges. Transparency guides the sourcing process; the brand prefers raw materials that can be traced to a specific region or tradition, whether it is a rare peat‑smoked ambergris substitute or a hand‑picked Scottish heather. Sustainability is not a marketing tagline but a practical concern: BeauFort works with small farms and cooperatives that practice low‑impact harvesting. The brand also values the tactile experience of fragrance, designing each launch as an event where the scent, the glass, and the surrounding narrative converge. This holistic approach reflects a belief that perfume should engage the mind, body, and imagination simultaneously.
