The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2015, Jean-Claude Ellena returned to Equipage. The original, created by Guy Robert in 1970, was plumper, hairier, indulgent. He worked with geranium, clove, and sandalwood, materials that already lived in the original, and built something leaner from the same foundation. Ellena approached the original with fresh eyes, recognizing the materials that had always been there and finding new ways to let them speak. Equipage Geranium isn't a replacement. It takes the same house and the same quiet confidence, but distills them into a more focused expression. The foundation remains, but the structure feels more intentional, each material placed with care rather than accumulated.
Geranium reads floral, rose-adjacent, people say, but it's also green, minty, almost medicinal in its sharpness. The note carries a complexity that defies easy categorization, moving between floral sweetness and herbal assertiveness without settling into either camp entirely. Clove adds dry spice, providing warmth and a certain aromatic depth that complements rather than overwhelms. Sandalwood brings its characteristic warmth and creaminess, with subtle lemony undertones that add brightness without becoming dominant.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, with sharp minty green geranium and a dulled rose undertone creating an impression that reads as soapy and clean. Within minutes, the geranium sharpens further while sandalwood shifts from creamy to lemony, taking on a woodier character that adds structure to the fragrance. A saddle-soap accord emerges, subtle but present, threading the middle phases together and providing continuity as the composition evolves. By the late drydown, sandalwood dominates completely, its warm woodiness filling the space left by the retreating geranium. The composition becomes dry and warm, with clove lingering like a memory of spice that persists through the finish. Projection is moderate throughout most of the wear, staying close to the skin rather than projecting loudly into the surrounding space.
Cultural impact
Equipage Geranium occupies a specific corner of the market, warm spicy, aromatic, masculine without being heavy. The fragrance appeals to those who appreciate classical perfumery and want something that doesn't shout for attention. Its positioning as a refined masculine scent places it among other understated fragrances that prioritize craftsmanship over trend-chasing. The warm spicy character and aromatic quality give it presence without loudness, making it suitable for contexts where a more assertive fragrance would be inappropriate.
