The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Xerjoff founded its atelier in Turin in 2007, treating fragrance as a sculptural medium that balances Italian precision with unexpected artistic boldness. Tempest Perfume Extrait arrived in 2023 as part of the Kemi collection, a line that frames perfume as alchemical practice, ingredients treated as raw materials awaiting transformation. The opening citrus accord echoes this philosophy, presenting ingredients in their most elemental state before the heart and base stages reveal their true character. Jasmine, cedarwood, and cypriol ground the composition in raw materiality, while oud and sandalwood anchor the drydown in the rich, resinous tradition of perfume as transformation.
The Kemi collection philosophy treats ingredients as alchemical components awaiting transformation. In Tempest Extrait, this translates to an opening that honors citrus in its rawest form, a bright assault of lemon and bergamot that gradually yields to heart notes of jasmine and cedarwood before the base stages reveal oud and sandalwood in their most refined state. The progression mirrors the alchemical journey, each phase a distinct transformation rather than a gradual blend. Pairing jasmine with cypriol creates an unexpected tension between lush florals and smoky depths.
The evolution
Tempest Extrait begins with a vivid citrus assault. Lemon and bergamot strike immediately, their brightness undercut by the warm spice of ginger and the green sharpness of elemi. Petitgrain Paraguay and lavender add complexity, creating an opening that feels both fresh and slightly aromatic, almost medicinal in its precision. The heart phase introduces jasmine as the dominant voice, its sweet, indolic character softened by amberwood and cedarwood. Rose appears as a quiet counterpoint, while cypriol introduces smoky, tar-like depths that feel industrial and modern. Gurjan balsam adds weight, the heart becoming increasingly resinous and warm. The drydown marks a complete transformation. Oud arrives with authority, its dark, animalic presence reshaping the composition. Vetiver and patchouli provide earthy, bitter counterpoints, while sandalwood offers creamy warmth. Amber and musk linger, creating a final phase that feels intimate, warm, and long-lasting.
Cultural impact
Since its 2023 debut, Tempest has sparked conversation among niche enthusiasts for its daring blend of bright citrus and deep oud, often described as a modern alchemical spell that bridges day‑time freshness with night‑time intensity. The fragrance quickly became a reference point in online forums, where collectors noted its ability to stand out on the shelf while still fitting into curated scent wardrobes. Its launch coincided with a broader resurgence of Mediterranean‑inspired compositions, influencing several boutique houses to experiment with similar citrus‑oud pairings.
