The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Xerjoff, founded in Turin in 2007, treats fragrance as sculptural art, and Starlight exemplifies this philosophy as part of their 2019 Spotlight collection. Crafted by perfumer Soïzic Beaucourt, the fragrance was designed to unfold as a complete composition rather than simply arriving at a final form. The opening notes of cardamom and bergamot were chosen to create immediate intrigue, a calculated tension between warmth and brightness that signals complexity ahead.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of contrast. Cardamom and bergamot open with opposing energies, one warm and inviting, the other bright and astringent. Cinnamon and clove in the heart build on that warmth while almond prevents the spice from becoming harsh, adding a softness that makes the edible quality approachable. Cedarwood and amber in the base ground everything, ensuring the fragrance does not float away into abstraction. The balsamic notes tie the warmth forward into the drydown, creating continuity between stages.
The evolution
Starlight begins with bergamot and cardamom, their brightness and spice arriving almost simultaneously to create a tension that compels closer attention. The heart then takes over, shifting the narrative toward warmth as cinnamon and clove amplify and almond introduces a soft edible quality. This middle stage feels Intimate and slightly exotic, like warm spice in a confined space. The drydown completes the arc by introducing balsamic notes, amber, and cedarwood, grounding the warmth in resinous sweetness and dry wood that lingers without overwhelming. The progression feels deliberate rather than chaotic, each stage earned by what came before.
Cultural impact
Starlight has earned a dedicated following among those who appreciate richly spiced, warm compositions. It's frequently described as festive and cozy, the kind of fragrance that feels made for cooler months and Intimate settings. The cardamom opening tends to divide opinion, which is a mark of a distinctive fragrance rather than a safe one. For those who connect with it, Starlight offers something harder to find: a niche-quality composition with strong projection and longevity, built for wearers who want a fragrance that announces itself.
