The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Tianle Feng founded Voice From The Sky in 2019 with a mission to transform personal memory into scent narratives, and Gentle King represents his first encounter with raw nature's power on the Serengeti. Watching a lion yawn across the endless plains, breath fogging in the cool morning air, Tianle felt the weight of something ancient and unapologetic. That instant, that raw power held in perfect stillness, became the blueprint for this fragrance. Black pepper and Sichuan pepper were chosen not for their heat but for their precision, the way they can cut through air like a signal across the savanna. Blackcurrant brightened the top like the glint of an eye catching light before the animal moves.
The note selection for Gentle King follows a single principle: materials that echo the duality of the lion encounter. The peppers and blackcurrant carry the alertness, the animal awareness of a creature at rest but capable. Cedarwood and hinoki cypress carry the dignity, the sense of something ancient and rooted. Frankincense and leather carry the reverence, the sacred quality of a moment observed rather than interrupted. Tonka bean keeps the composition from becoming purely austere, a reminder that power can be warm. This is not a fragrance designed to announce. It is designed to linger in a room after you have left it, to be recognized by those who know what they are smelling and rare enough to appreciate it.
The evolution
The opening lands with immediate intent. Black pepper and Sichuan pepper strike consecutively, their interplay almost tactile, while blackcurrant adds a tart brightness that feels like morning air across open plains. Within the first hour, the heart materializes gradually as cedarwood and hinoki cypress rise to meet iris and violet leaf. The atmosphere shifts from sharp to textured, hay grounding what could have become overly delicate. As the afternoon progresses, frankincense and oud take over, layering into something contemplative. Labdanum, leather, and tonka bean create a warm, persistent trail that feels less like perfume and more like the memory of having been somewhere wild and dignified at once.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 debut, Gentle King has sparked conversation among niche collectors for its bold lion tribute. Reviewers praise the daring pepper‑on‑amber narrative, while some note the leather note divides opinion. It’s often cited alongside Voice From The Sky’s other story‑driven releases as a scent that invites contemplation rather than trend‑following.
