The beginning
Isotta belongs to V Canto's Anime del Castello collection, a series that translates literary figures into something you can wear. The name carries the weight of medieval Italian legend, the kind of figure who occupies the space between history and myth. Paolo Terenzi composed it in 2020, drawing on a perfumery tradition that prizes narrative as much as olfactory construction. The fragrance reads as a portrait of someone who moves through rooms with composure, a character study rendered in eucalyptus, rose, and leather. It's built around the interplay of green herbal notes against a warm floral heart and a structured leathery base, creating a composition that feels both composed and slightly unsettled, like someone holding attention without raising their voice.
The composition does something most floral-leather hybrids skip. It opens with an herbal sharpness that refuses to behave like a typical feminine floral. Eucalyptus and Japanese shiso give the first fifteen minutes a green, almost medicinal clarity, then the Bulgarian rose and jasmine absolute arrive and have to fight through that cold front to register. The leather accord at the base doesn't anchor the warmth. It sharpens it, giving the Bourbon vanilla and tonka bean a structured backdrop instead of the usual soft landing. That tension between cold green and warm suede is the architecture.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the eucalyptus. It runs cool and clean, sharp enough to clear sinuses, layered with Italian lemon and grapefruit so the citrus reads bright rather than sweet. Soon after, the Japanese shiso makes itself known, an herbal green that feels like snapping a stem. Then something shifts. The florals don't bloom so much as break through. African geranium adds a peppery edge to the Bulgarian rose, and the jasmine absolute gives it weight without sweetness. Leather appears earlier than you'd expect for a floral, cutting through the floral warmth with something structured and dry. The Tuscan leather and cedarwood dominate the second half, but never fully evict the rose. It lingers underneath, warmer now, sweeter. As the hours pass, the vanilla and tonka bean settle into something soft and skin-like, almost ambery in its quietness.
