The beginning
Mastin arrived in 2015 as part of V Canto's Blu collection, a line the house has developed around heavier, more resinous compositions. The saffron-rose-cardamom opening carries a guarded warmth that sets the tone before the fragrance even settles, a spiced brightness that feels curated rather than accidental. The composition doesn't chase prettiness, and it doesn't try to soften itself for easier wear. It holds something back. You notice the saffron threading through the first few minutes with a kind of leathery tension, the rose sitting just beneath it like a shadow rather than a bloom, and cardamom lending its green bite to keep everything from collapsing into sweetness. As the hours pass, the woods and oud arrive with weight, settling close to skin and refusing to evaporate politely.
What defines Mastin's opening is its placement of white oud among the top notes rather than burying it deeper in the pyramid. White oud carries a drier, cleaner character compared to traditional oud, and here it arrives alongside cardamom and saffron from the first spray, giving the composition a woody-spicy impression immediately. The top notes don't build toward that impression over hours; they arrive already shaped. Cardamom provides the initial green heat, saffron layers in its metallic warmth, and the white oud keeps the whole opening lifted and dry, almost papery.

The first thirty minutes burn with controlled intensity. Cardamom leads with its sharp, green heat, and saffron unspools underneath in a slow thread. Rose appears but doesn't behave like itself; it stays dusty, slightly metallic, as if filtered through the saffron rather than blooming on its own. White oud gives the opening an unexpected lift, something almost paper-thin and dry. By the one-hour mark, the composition pivots. Cedarwood and jasmine arrive together, and the jasmine reads cool rather than indolic, restrained in a way that prevents the heart from tipping into sweetness. Iris settles in with a powder that feels cool against the saffron's lingering warmth. Orange blossom surfaces briefly, a flicker of sweetness that disappears before it fully registers. Then the shift happens.
