The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lunanera arrived in 2017, composed by Paolo Terenzi for the Italian niche house his sister Tiziana leads. The fragrance opens with a crisp, green fig leaf that feels almost dewy, immediately cutting through the air with a vegetal brightness. As it develops, jasmine emerges with a lush, heady quality, weaving through the greenness and softening it into something warmer. The base settles into amber and warm woods, creating a contrast with the initial freshness. This is a fragrance that balances earthiness with elegance, the fig leaf grounding the florals in a way that feels both natural and intentional.
What makes Lunanera structurally interesting is the tension between its top and base. The opening is green, almost vegetal, fig leaf doing exactly what fig leaf should, cutting through the florals like morning air through a garden. Then the middle blooms heavy and warm, jasmine and Bulgarian rose arriving together with a richness that fills the space around you. The base resolves into a powdery amber that doesn't shout, a gentle warmth rather than a statement. Ylang-ylang adds something almost fruity underneath, a subtle complexity that rewards attention.
The evolution
The opening begins with fig leaf and a flash of citrus, green and bright, before the florals take over. Jasmine and Bulgarian rose arrive together, heavy and warm, with ylang-ylang adding something almost fruity underneath. The heart holds for several hours, powdery from the iris and heliotrope, sweet from tonka bean. By the time the florals begin to fade, the vanilla and myrrh have settled into something warm and intimate, oakmoss adding an earthy base that keeps the sweetness from floating away. The progression feels organic, each layer emerging as the previous one softens, creating a continuous conversation between green freshness and warm depth.
Cultural impact
Lunanera represents Tiziana Terenzi's broader commitment to emotional storytelling through scent, drawing from the house's Italian heritage and the creative partnership between siblings Tiziana and Paolo Terenzi. The house has built a catalog that resists seasonal marketing conventions, instead releasing fragrances tied to personal memories and atmospheric themes. The 2017 release of Lunanera embodies this philosophy, a fragrance that prioritizes emotional resonance over commercial positioning.
