The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fars was released in 2012 as part of Xerjoff's Oud Stars collection. The fragrance opens with a bright citrus sparkle that quickly gives way to a clean lavender presence, herbal and aromatic. This introduction serves as a bridge, easing the deep oud heart into the composition without overwhelming the senses. The result is a blend that manages to feel both grounded and airy, with the precious, rare materials at its core earning it a place among the collection's most ambitious offerings. The oud provides a resinous, animalic depth that anchors the lighter top notes, while the overall balance speaks to a careful hand at work, one that understands how to layer complexity without chaos.
What makes Fars structurally interesting is the lavender-oud pairing. These two materials rarely share a pyramid, lavender reads medicinal and green against oud's dark, animalic warmth. The bridge is the jasmine absolute in the heart, which adds a creamy floralcy that softens the handoff between top and base. In the base, the combination of white oud with Haitian vetiver creates an earthy, slightly smoky drydown that distinguishes Fars from sweeter oud fragrances. Sandalwood and patchouli round out the woody foundation without adding sweetness. It's an oriental that stays dry.
The evolution
The opening phase of Fars unfolds with bright citrus and a clean lavender presence, herbal and aromatic, before the bergamot fades and the core of the composition takes shape. That's where the real interest lies. The jasmine threads through the herbal base with a soft, almost powdery sweetness that tempers the sharper edges. Cedar arrives next, lending structure and a dry woody presence. Then the oud foundation begins to assert itself, the amber and white oud building slowly, doubling the warmth without tipping into sweetness. Vetiver keeps the drydown grounded, slightly smoky, earthy, resinous. The final hours are intimate: close to the skin, warm wood and faint animalic. The kind of drydown that rewards re-entering a room an hour after you've left it.
Cultural impact
Within the Oud Stars collection, Fars takes a different path than its siblings. The lavender-forward opening distinguishes it immediately, giving the fragrance an aromatic character that sets it apart from more conventionally smoky oud fragrances. This herbal lift tempers the dark resinous heart, creating something that feels both grounded and elevated. The jasmine threads through the base with a soft sweetness that prevents the composition from becoming heavy, while the cedar and vetiver drydown keeps everything resinous and earthy.
