The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Indian Grass takes its name from the aromatic materials at its core, vetiver and patchouli. The idea was simple: capture the smoky, herbal depth of those materials without replicating any landscape. Dominique Moellhausen built around that single concept, letting the vetiver and patchouli anchor everything else. The result is a fragrance that opens with a cool, bright burst before settling into something earthier and more contemplative. Indian Grass is a concentrated study in green smoke and herbal warmth, named for the materials that make it possible. The interplay between the two main notes creates a tension that holds throughout wear, with the vetiver lending a slightly bitter, mineral quality while the patchouli adds its characteristic earthy sweetness.
What makes Indian Grass distinctive is the opening salvo. Cannabis and peppermint arrive together, a cool and immediate contrast to the earthy base waiting below. Here, the complexity is immediate, mint cooling the herb, caraway and cardamom adding aromatic warmth, rhubarb bringing a tart green edge that keeps everything grounded. The structure rewards attention from the first spray. From the very first moments, the fragrance announces its intentions without hesitation, layering green, cool, and warm elements in a way that feels both precise and alive.
The evolution
The opening hits sharp and cool, mint and cannabis first, bright and attention-grabbing. Caraway and cardamom arrive within minutes, adding warmth and a faint spice. Rhubarb keeps the green quality present, tart and leafy. The heart develops over the next few hours: chamomile and elemi soften the edges, coriander bridges the transition to the base. Then patchouli, vetiver, and guaiac wood settle in, earthy, smoky, with birch adding a faint leathery tar note. Incense threads through the drydown, keeping it resinous and animalic. The fragrance unfolds in distinct waves, each phase revealing new facets while maintaining the overall green-smoky character throughout wear.
Cultural impact
Indian Grass occupies a specific corner of the fragrance landscape, herbal and aromatic in character, grounded in smoky, woody depth. It appeals to the wearer who wants something unconventional without relying on the usual note-list suspects. The fragrance stands apart for its unapologetic focus on green-smoky territory, offering a distinct alternative to more mainstream aromatic compositions.
