The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Paradoxical comes from Sly John's Lab, the focused line founded in 2022 by Serge and Helen Mints after their earlier work with M.intparfums. The brand keeps its catalogue deliberately small, choosing to build around a single olfactory concept rather than spread attention across multiple releases. For Paradoxical, the concept centers on contradiction itself: clean versus dark, bright versus smoky, the rational versus the atmospheric. The perfumer Dominique Moellhaus built this fragrance to move through these oppositions without resolving them too neatly.
The note architecture reflects a deliberate tension between brightness and darkness. Mint, citrus, and apple serve as the rational first impression, clean and approachable. Lavender, juniper, and incense complicate that simplicity, adding an aromatic, slightly mysterious character. In the base, tonka bean and amber provide warmth while moss, vetiver, and cedarwood ground the composition in something earthy and durable. The intention is a fragrance that reads differently across its stages, never fully committing to a single identity.
The evolution
The fragrance begins as a study in freshness. Mint and lemon arrive sharp and immediate, while green apple adds a fruity brightness and cardamom provides a subtle spiced warmth. Bergamot polishes the opening with a refined citrus quality. The heart introduces lavender and juniper, shifting the trajectory from bright to aromatic, while incense and ylang-ylang temper the dryness with smoke and cream. The drydown then drops the pretense of freshness entirely. Tonka bean introduces a gentle sweetness, moss adds earthy depth, and vetiver, amber, and cedarwood settle into a warm, resinous woody foundation that feels nothing like the opening.
Cultural impact
Paradoxical quickly became a cultural touchstone among niche fragrance enthusiasts, symbolising a shift toward hybrid compositions that blend fresh citrus with aromatic herbs. Its launch in 2022 coincided with a broader movement away from single‑note trends, encouraging collectors to explore layered storytelling. Social media buzz highlighted its office‑friendly profile, prompting discussions about scent etiquette in professional settings. Over the following year, the fragrance inspired several pop‑up events and collaborative playlists, cementing its role as a conversation starter in both online forums and boutique gatherings, while reinforcing the brand’s reputation for daring yet wearable creations.
