The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Six Scents launched its debut series in 2008 as a collaboration between Symrise, Metaproject, and Seven New York, a fragrance project built on a specific kind of exchange between fashion and perfumery. The brand invited six fashion designers and artists to each translate a creative vision into a finished scent, commissioning a perfumer to bring each concept to life. Preen took the sixth slot and named their contribution Teen Spirit. Mark Buxton composed it. The result opens with Calabrian bergamot and sea notes that read more like wind off open water than anything tropical, a thin marine brightness layered with the green-petaled edge of magnolia. Turkish rose threads through the early stages, silk against rougher cloth, before rhubarb pushes in with tart, almost jammy ripeness.
What makes Teen Spirit structurally unusual is the way it fuses aquatic brightness with roasted warmth. The opening reads cold and marine, Calabrian bergamot riding alongside sea notes that feel more like wind off open water than anything tropical, but the composition pivots sharply into rhubarb and hazelnut, a pairing that stays on the edge of gourmand territory without tipping into sweetness. The red pepper at the heart keeps the whole thing honest, a clean bite that prevents the hazelnut from turning cozy.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to Calabrian bergamot, sharp and almost salty, riding alongside sea notes that read more like wind off water than beach umbrella. Magnolia enters quickly, not the creamy tropical kind but a thinner, almost green-petaled version, with Turkish rose threading through like a thread of silk in rougher cloth. Around the thirty-minute mark the temperature shifts. Rhubarb pushes in, tart and slightly jammy, and the hazelnut note arrives with a roasted, almost praline-adjacent warmth. Red pepper flickers in and out at the edges, not hot, more like the sensation of biting into something with unexpected zest. By hour two, the florals have softened into something skin-like. Sandalwood shows up quiet, not the dense sandalwood of incense temples but a pale, almost translucent wood that lets the musk underneath do its work.
Cultural impact
Teen Spirit arrived in 2008 as part of Six Scents' debut series, a collection that treated fragrance as a creative medium rather than a commercial product. The label Preen was paired with Mark Buxton for this sixth installment, and the release was dedicated to Designers Against AIDS. Each fragrance in the series emerged from a direct collaboration between a fashion designer or artist and a perfumer, an exchange that placed the creative vision of the designer at the center of the development process.
