Young introduced Calice Becker to the nappa leather he worked with daily, and Becker translated that quality into the composition. The result is a fragrance that captures the essence of fine leather without relying on aggressive leather accords. This careful translation from material to scent defines the perfume's character from the first application.
The choice to build around nappa leather rather than more aggressive leather accords creates a specific kind of softness. Traditional leather fragrances often rely on birch tar, cade, or strong animalics for impact. Nappa Noir presents leather as a refined material quality, with softness, warmth, and a subtle give that evokes well-used leather. Iris powder and violet's quiet floral character provide an elegant counterpoint to the leather base. The inclusion of speculaas cookie absolute, a spiced Dutch biscuit note, contributes additional warmth to the composition.
The evolution
The opening arrives clean and immediate, with violet leaf absolute hitting first, green and slightly mineral, cutting through with precision before the leather fully announces itself. Birch tar contributes a faint smoky edge, like the memory of a match struck near the material. As the fragrance develops, the nappa leather asserts itself fully. This is soft leather, the kind that drapes rather than dominates. Orris root brings powdery elegance, tobacco adds depth without heaviness, and saffron threads warmth through the heart. The iris powder never disappears. It persists alongside the leather throughout the development, preventing the composition from becoming simply warm or animalic.
