The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Roja Dove has called Chypré scents compulsory since childhood, their magnetism, he says, impossible to escape. Impeccably refined and ultra-tailored, they command attention without effort. In 2018, he turned that obsession into Chypré Extraordinaire: a new take on a structure that dates back to the island of Cyprus itself. The idea was not to abandon the classical form but to transform it, to keep the mossy, woody soul intact while introducing something unexpected into the composition.
What makes the Extraordinaire different is the white floral injection. Tuberose, jasmine, rose de Mai, ylang-ylang, these aren't secondary players. They arrive alongside peach and plum, fruity and sensual, and they shift the entire register of the Chypré from austere to sumptuous. The aldehydes in the opening do their part too, lending a vintage coolness that makes the florals feel almost metallic before they soften. The result is a fragrance that holds its classical bones but runs warmer than expected.
The evolution
The opening is aldehydic and citrus, bergamot over sparkling aldehydes, the kind of entrance that announces itself across a room. Within minutes the florals begin their work: tuberose and jasmine lift the peach and plum, and the combination reads sweet without ever becoming saccharine. The drydown is where the Chypré earns its name. Oakmoss, civet, and leather settle into the base alongside sandalwood, patchouli, and a whisper of animalic warmth. Vanilla and tonka bean keep it soft at the edges. On most skin, the full arc runs 8-10 hours, with sillage that stays strong through the first three hours before becoming intimate and close.
Cultural impact
Chypré Extraordinaire occupies a rare position, a fragrance that appeals to purists who want the classical structure intact while offering enough warmth and sensuality to feel modern. The aldehydic opening gives it vintage credibility; the white floral heart keeps it relevant in a market that rewards richness over restraint.
