The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name tells you where to stand. Perfumer Jutinat Piyaweerawong built this 2019 composition around a single childhood memory, standing somewhere in the dark corner of a Chinese herbal medicine shop in a Chinatown region. The space was cryptic, shadowed, and yet it smelled of everything at once. Spicy, bitter, refreshing herbs mingling together, each one distinct yet contributing to a layered aromatic whole. The brand framed that feeling as the brief: not the storefront, not the street, but the quiet interior where the air itself carries the scent of medicine. Proad took that memory and gave it a shape you could wear.
The composition earns its strangeness. Three peppers open the door, black, pink, and cardamom. The heart refuses to play it safe: cinnamon and leather alongside black tea and dark chocolate. That pairing is unusual on paper, yet it works because each ingredient carries its own weight and the composition balances them with care. Then the base loads up with intention: tobacco, vanilla, patchouli, tonka bean, benzoin, oud, cedar, sandalwood. The sheer density of materials here gives the fragrance a layered architecture, a structure built to last through hours of wear.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately. Black pepper and cardamom push forward within the first minute, pink pepper trailing behind with a softer sparkle. There's nothing tentative about it. The heart begins to assert itself not long after, cinnamon and leather rising while dark chocolate melts underneath. The black tea adds a curious dryness, almost astringent, that keeps the sweetness in check. As the composition continues, the base materials begin their long ascent. Tobacco and vanilla take the lead, but the patchouli and benzoin underneath keep the whole thing grounded, slightly resinous, never cloying. Oud whispers at the edges. Cedar and sandalwood hold the structure. The drydown is where this fragrance does its best work: warm, leathery, faintly sweet, with just enough tobacco smoke to keep it from drifting into dessert territory.
Cultural impact
Standing Somewhere In The Shadow draws its entire structural premise from the herbal-shop inspiration. The fragrance doesn't reference the memory decoratively; it builds itself around the atmosphere of a dimly lit interior where dozens of botanical ingredients share the same air. This kind of place-based composition appeals to wearers who want their scent to carry narrative weight, something that conjures a specific setting rather than an abstract mood.
