The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nusa Art of Scent, founded in 2022, translates Indonesia's island biodiversity into olfactory vignettes that capture specific landscapes and cultural memories. Abdullah Al Roman, the perfumer behind Meraura, sought to bottle the atmosphere of Borneo's interior, where ancient trees rise from humid undergrowth and resinous sap fills the air. The brand's limited-run philosophy ensures each fragrance receives full attention to raw material quality and composition.
The note pyramid reflects a specific creative intention: opening with accessible citrus-spice to draw attention, transitioning through Borneo camphor as the distinctive forest element, and settling into a warm woody base that rewards patience. Each layer builds on the previous, creating a fragrance that changes character throughout the day. The pairing of cool camphor with warm amber and resinous styrax creates tension between freshness and warmth, while the woody elements provide continuity from heart through drydown.
The evolution
Meraura begins with the sharp brightness of grapefruit lifted by black pepper's dry spice, an opening that feels like stepping into tropical morning air. Borneo camphor takes over the heart, bringing a cool, almost medicinal forest quality that distinguishes this fragrance from typical woody compositions. Mahogany adds deep, dark woodiness while orris root provides earthy, slightly powdery balance. The drydown reveals cedarwood, guaiac wood, and vetiver as the primary wooden foundation, with amber and musk adding warmth and styrax introducing smoky, balsamic resinousness that extends the wear for hours.
Cultural impact
Meraura earned a finalist slot in the Artisan category of the 11th Art & Olfaction Awards, positioning it among emerging indie scents that celebrate regional timber notes. Wearers note its woody‑amber depth as a quiet nod to Southeast Asian craft, making it a conversation starter in niche circles.
