The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Pontevecchio W takes its name from the historic Ponte Vecchio district in Florence, a name that evokes centuries of Italian artisanal heritage and the refined aesthetic of a city known for its craftsmanship. The perfumer Marie Duchêne built the composition around Florentine iris as the central reference, threading it through every phase of the development. The result is a fragrance that embodies understated elegance, the kind that announces itself through quality rather than volume. Iris takes center stage, its powdery, slightly metallic character providing a vintage-inspired foundation that feels both timeless and contemporary.
Iris functions as a binding note in perfumery, holding disparate elements together and adding a powdery, almost vintage character. Here, Duchêne uses that quality deliberately. The jasmine and Bulgarian rose don't behave as they typically would in a floral heart. They defer to the iris, their sweetness tempered by its powdery structure. This creates something unusual: a rose that doesn't bloom freely, a jasmine that stays grounded. The result reads as restrained rather than muted, florals that know their place and own it.
The evolution
The opening arrives with bergamot and mandarin orange, citric and clean, the coriander adding a subtle green counterpoint. As the initial brightness settles, the iris takes command and maintains its presence throughout the development. The heart unfolds with jasmine and Bulgarian rose entering, but the iris dominates them both, keeping them refined, preventing them from being overly romantic. The drydown brings sandalwood and white musk, warm and close, while the powdery iris continues to linger in the background. Over time, the composition reveals itself in layers, each wearing period offering a slightly different perspective on how these notes interact and settle against the skin.
Cultural impact
Pontevecchio W stands apart from typical feminine fragrances with its classical structure and powdery character. The composition features powdery iris at its core, supported by a woody base that provides warmth and longevity. These elements create a fragrance that feels established rather than fashionable, appealing to those who prefer understated elegance. The clean drydown and refined progression keep it relevant to contemporary tastes while honoring iris perfumery traditions. The scent finds its natural audience among those seeking something distinctive yet harmonious.
