    Master Perfumer

    Marie Duchêne

Marie Duchêne grew up amid the vineyards of Reims, where the scent of blooming orchards sparked a lifelong fascination with fragrance. By age ten she was mixing wild herbs in her kitchen, convinced that scent could tell stories as vivid as any painting. In 1994 she earned a place at ISIPCA in Versailles, France’s premier school for perfume, cosmetics and food aromas. There she honed her technical foundation, mastering the chemistry of essential oils and synthetic accords. After graduation she moved to Grasse, the historic heart of perfumery, and completed apprenticeships at several boutique houses. Those early years taught her the discipline of precise extraction and the art of balancing tradition with modernity. By the late 1990s she began receiving commissions from independent brands, quickly gaining a reputation for her nuanced handling of natural ingredients. Today she balances work between her own studio and collaborations, guiding projects from concept to final bottle with a steady hand and an ear for subtle contrast.

    The signature

    How Marie composes

Marie’s style leans toward naturalism, favoring botanical absolutes, fine woods, and delicate florals. She often begins with a single heart‑note—lavender, rose, or jasmine—then builds a supporting structure of citrus top notes and soft musks. Her technique includes careful maceration, allowing ingredients to mature and reveal hidden facets before blending. She avoids heavy synthetics unless they serve a clear purpose, preferring transparent accords that evolve on the skin. The result is a scent that feels both refined and approachable, with a clear narrative arc.

    Philosophy

    What drives Marie

Marie believes that perfume should echo the quiet moments we often overlook—a sunrise over a misty field, the first breath of rain on dry stone. She approaches each brief as a conversation, listening to the client’s memories and translating them into scent language. Her work respects the integrity of raw materials; she prefers to let a single note speak before weaving it into a broader composition. Sustainability guides her choices, and she favors ingredients that are responsibly sourced and transparently labeled. Above all, she seeks to create fragrances that feel intimate, like a whispered secret shared between close friends.
