The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name means the Maestro's caprice, a whim, a sudden desire. In Italian opera, capriccio implies creative spontaneity, something unplanned yet inevitable. For Puccini, that word captured everything: the impulsiveness, the neurotic brilliance, the contradictions he wore like a second skin. This fragrance was commissioned in 2018 exclusively for Campomarzio 70, designed to translate Puccini's private sphere into scent, his indulgence and solitude, his arrogance and shyness, the man behind the operas. The Exceptional Edition designation signals something rare, something with intention.
Every note maps to a facet of Puccini's character. Rum for the indulgence he loved, the late nights, the women, the cigars. Tobacco for the solitude, the walks by his lake in Lucca, the quiet before composition struck. Honey for the sweetness beneath the irascibility. Vanilla for the warmth that lingers. Orchid, unexpected, slightly green, for the rare beauty of someone who could write La Bohème and then destroy a friend's confidence with a single sentence. Michelle Moellhausen built this from personality, not from trend.
The evolution
Rum opens first, dark and warm, like the beginning of an evening that has no plan. Cinnamon follows quickly, not harsh, just present. The orchid adds something slightly sweet, almost green, the way an orchid smells in a greenhouse rather than a perfume bottle. The honey-tobacco phase arrives within the first hour. This is the heart of the composition: honey thick and golden, tobacco dry and aged. Benzoin adds a creamy resinous warmth that holds the two together rather than letting them separate. The vanilla-tobacco drydown takes over around the fourth hour. The tobacco never fully disappears, it fades, softens, becomes an undertone rather than a statement. Vanilla settles in, sweet but no longer loud. Coumarin adds a hay-like warmth, labdanum a resinous depth that keeps the finish from going fully confectionery. White musk keeps everything clean on skin. This fragrance holds for 8-10 hours on most skin types.
Cultural impact
The 2018 Exceptional Edition release drew attention from collectors seeking narrative-driven compositions. The Puccini tribute, treating the composer as both subject and collaborator, offered a distinctive cultural angle within the exceptional edition category. While rum-tobacco-vanilla combinations are well-established in niche perfumery, this particular interpretation with its honeyed tobacco and vanilla drydown earned recognition among collectors drawn to the Italian theatrical sensibility.
