The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nabeel designed Oud Cafu for the Souq Collection in 2022, building a bridge between Arabian perfumery traditions and a more global audience. The name itself carries weight, Cafu evokes the foam of Arabian coffee, that ceremonial first gesture of hospitality, the pride of the host. Drawing from five decades of oud mastery, the house created a fragrance that embodies that moment: your own arrival, your own ritual, your own small victory to celebrate. Tropical fruit and citrus open the composition, giving it immediate brightness. Rose and jasmine arrive next, softened by lily of the valley. The base anchors everything in oud, amber, and civet, the deep warmth that lingers long after the coffee cup empties.
What makes Oud Cafu stand apart is how it balances two worlds. Traditional Arabian oud fragrances tend toward the resinous, the animalic, the deeply resin-forward. This one adds a layer of fruit-floral sweetness that makes it more accessible without losing its Gulf-born character. The civet note, present in the base, adds a darker dimension beneath the honey and vanilla, giving depth to what could otherwise read as purely sweet. It's the combination that experienced oud wearers notice: something familiar, something different, both at once.
The evolution
The opening hits sharp. Saffron and cinnamon arrive first, then a burst of citrus, bergamot, grapefruit, lime, apple, pineapple. Bright and slightly tart, like walking into a perfumery where every surface holds a different note. The milk note keeps it from becoming too sharp. Within the first hour, the honey emerges. The florals begin to bloom, tuberose and jasmine growing louder as the citrus fades. The heart has real warmth. Not aggressive, but present. This is where the fragrance shifts from opening to fully itself. The drydown is where the name earns its keep. The oud arrives late but stays long, blending with amber, vanilla, and civet. The civet surprises, it's subtle at first, then amplifies in the final hours, giving the sweetness a darker edge. That's the tell. Sweetness that knows it doesn't need to prove anything. The base holds close to the skin, intimate and warm, long after the rest of the composition has settled.
Cultural impact
Oud Cafu belongs to the Souq Collection, Nabeel's line built for the contemporary Gulf wearer's expanded world. It reflects a house that understands oud deeply but isn't content to only serve tradition, the fruit-floral sweetness makes it approachable for wearers outside the region without losing its identity.
